Gourock Public Realm

Reinvigorating the west coast of Scotland

Gourock’s multi-million-pound infrastructure improvement scheme opened to the public in December 2015 and is helping to ease accessibility to the Scottish town centre and coastline.  Gleeds provided cost management services on the project, which has been recognised for reinvigorating the area – creating a stronger local economy and more sustainable community.

The purpose of the project was to create:

  • An enhanced waterfront space for visitors
  • A one way road system to aid the flow of traffic through Kempock Street
  • A new carpark with increased number of spaces and improved sea wall
  • Better drainage and lighting
  • Public realm improvements and street furniture

The improvement works project is part of a wider regeneration programme for the area delivered by Riverside Inverclyde Ltd and is amongst Scotland’s best, winning big at Scotland’s property awards in 2016, including:

  • Best Townscape Regeneration Project in Scotland – Herald Property Awards 2016
  • Scotland’s Most Improved Town (finalist) – SURF Awards 2016 (Scotland’s Urban Regeneration Forum)
  • Special Commendation for the project that demonstrated the greatest benefit that civil engineering brings to society and the local community - The Saltire Awards
