Imperial War Museum North

Gleeds provided planning supervision services for the Imperial War Museum North (IWMN) project, the first ever British project to be designed by renowned Polish-American architect Daniel Liebeskind.

Built on a World War II bombsite, its jagged design is intended to represent the pieces of a shattered globe, a symbol of the effects of war, with each shard representing the three ‘elements’ of war taking place on the land, air, and sea.

Since its completion in 2001, the IWMN has won a range of awards, and was named one of the top ten buildings of the last century in The Rough Guide to England’s 2008 edition.
