Sport England

Bringing sport to primary schools nationwide

Gleeds was appointed by Sport England as programme manager and monitor for its ‘Primary Spaces’ school initiative. The scheme aims to increase physical activity and introduce the fundamentals of sport to primary school students, encouraging participation in sport into their adult life.

Gleeds facilitated the procurement of contractors across the country in 600 primary schools, building new play facilities devoted to physical activity or adapting existing space.

Primary Spaces used £18m of funds received from the Olympic Legacy fund to help primary schools with little or no outside space make the most of what is available.

Achievements

  • Procured a national long list of 41 suitable contractors to give suitable regional coverage
  • Supported 544 schools who opted in for programme management support
  • Managed 384 tenders in 5 waves through the Gleeds site
We are delighted to be contributing to the development of such an exciting and worthwhile project. Our expertise in working with schools and sports venues means that we are well equipped to contribute to this innovative initiative. This is a great example of seeing the virtues of legacy, following the London 2012 games, being put into practice and it is something with which we are proud to be associated.
